Reigate & Banstead Win Big at Surrey Youth Games

Grit and determination earnt young people from Reigate & Banstead nine medal positions at the Specsavers Surrey Youth Games (23-24 June), despite the sweltering heat.

Speaking about the games, Reigate & Banstead Borough Council's Executive Member for Leisure and Wellbeing, Cllr Rod Ashford said: "The Specsavers Surrey Youth Games is a fantastic event bringing together young people from all 11 Surrey boroughs. This year, over 200 young people across our borough took up the offer of eight weeks of free training in a sport of their choice. From those, 147 made it through to the 18 teams which represented Reigate & Banstead at the Youth Games. The day was hot and sunny with great sport and a great atmosphere of camaraderie and sportsmanship from all the teams involved. My sincere thanks go to all the amazing people who made these games happen: from the volunteers and coaches to the parents and players."

The Specsavers Surrey Youth Games is the largest multi-sports young people’s competition in Surrey and involves around 2,000 of children in school years 3 and over from all 11 boroughs and districts across the county.

Each year, Reigate & Banstead Borough Council brings together clubs, coaches and volunteers to provide free training for local young people to try out a new sport over the spring and early summer.

Teams are then selected for the final competition which takes place at the prestigious Surrey Sports Park in Guildford and Woking Leisure Centre.

This year, TeamRBBC entered teams to sports including badminton, girls’ football, hockey, judo, girls’ rugby, girls’ netball, squash, tennis and boccia. The team received medal placings in nine events.
