Special Book of Dedication to WW1 heroes
Biographies on all 122 heroes listed on Horley's War Memorial are currently being compiled for a special book marking 100 years since the outbreak of the Great War.
Researched by Doug Cox, all the men who feature on the memorial at the junction of Brighton Road and Vicarage Lane will have one page each in the book of dedication which is to be displayed in Horley Library next year as well as on the town council's website.
Alan Jones, Town Clerk, stated the Town Council believed it was important to remember British and Commonwealth troops who were killed in the First World War.
"We are determined to make sure their bravery for their country is not forgotten" he told Get Surrey. "The increase in attendances and awareness each year at the Horley Remembrance Day service is testament to this, especially as young people also take such a great interest. The Town Council along with all other organizations believes it is an important duty to remember the British and Commonwealth troops who lost their lives fighting in the Great War. We are determined to make sure their bravery for their country is not forgotten. The production of a Book of Dedication will augment the war memorial to all those fallen who fought for our country. It will help residents understand how Horley and its surrounding areas played its part in the Great War, and ensure memories of that sacrifice for British freedom and liberty are kept alive for generations to come.”
