Press Release: Skatepark Makeover at Horley Recreation Ground
The skatepark in Horley Recreation Ground is sporting a new look. Thanks to a joint project facilitated by Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, and funded by Growing Health Together and Horley Town Council, the skatepark has been given a makeover on both sides by renowned local graffiti artist ‘Uncle Stubble’
Uncle Stubble worked with local teenagers to give them significant input into the final designs. Uncle Stubble said, ‘On community projects, it’s always great to involve the local kids as much as possible, to show that their ideas matter and can come to fruition. I spoke to a group that use the YMCA ‘Y Bus’ in Horley Recreation Grounds, showing them some examples of my work. I was happy that they lit up when they saw them, as that’s my main incentive, to inspire. Lots of creative ideas came up, as they always do. And I then narrowed down what would be possible in the size, and what was not as relevant. They gravitated immediately to my lettering, so we decided to write Skate Park on one side, colourful, but readable. Using stills from a skating video game was another suggestion, and exciting poses. Speed and action were talked about, so I fitted the skateboard and feet on the other side.’
Horley Town Mayor, Cllr Lynnette Easterbrook expressed her delight with the project’s outcome and commented that, ‘It’s wonderful to see such bright colours lighting up the Recreation Ground. Graffiti art as an artform is often underappreciated, but it’s a chance to bring art into public spaces and make it available to all. The fact that local teenagers had a hand in developing the design makes it that much more special.’
