Pay Less to Travel This Winter!

All single bus fares capped at £2 from 1^st January

• From 1st January to 31st March, Metrobus will offer all bus fares capped at £2 per single journey
• The Government is providing up to £60 million for bus operators outside London to help people with the cost of living

Metrobus will be offering cheaper fares to local residents, capped at £2 on all single-fare bus journeys. The offer is funded through a £60 million scheme under the Government’s “Help for Households” program to help the public with the cost of living pressures over the winter.

This means that passengers can expect to make big savings from longer bus routes. For example, the 270 route between East Grinstead and Brighton, usually £7 (31 miles), and the popular 10 route between Crawley and Gatwick, usually £2.70 (6 miles), will be capped at £2.

The initiative, which ends on March 31st, will help millions of passengers with travel costs for work, education, and essential journeys.

“The scheme will enable passengers to go further than ever for £2, so everyone can enjoy a little more freedom when using our services.”

Buses Minister Richard Holden said:?“Bus travel remains the most popular form of public transport in England, making up around half of all journeys. That’s why we’re investing £60 million to cap single bus fares at £2 to support every passenger and help get people back on the bus.?

“With the scheme set to take two million car journeys off the road, it’s fantastic to see so many bus operators signing up to the fare cap, helping people to ‘Get Around for £2’ between the 1st January and 31st March.”?

The £2 fare cap runs from 1st January to 1st June

What exactly is the £2 bus fares cap? 

• From 1st January until 31st March 2023, the cost of a single bus fare will be a maximum of £2. This is being funded by the Government to help ease the cost of living pressures over the winter.
• The cap will help people save money on their travel costs and will encourage more people to choose buses for local journeys and beyond. 

What journeys does it cover? 

• The £2 single fare will cover all journeys by participating bus operators. Brighton & Hove and Metrobus are participating, so any journey you take on our services will be included.
• On routes where return fares are available, these will be reduced to a maximum of £4.

Is there a maximum distance? 

• No, there isn’t a maximum distance. But the cap only covers local buses – it doesn’t cover inter-city coach journeys.  

Is every bus company taking part?

• No. A list of all bus companies taking part is available here.

What payment methods are included? 

You can pay for the £2 fare in the following ways: 

• Using Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay to tap on, tap off the bus
• Buying a special £2 single ticket on our app, which must be used by 31^st?March and be activated less   than 15 minutes before boarding the bus
• Using Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay to buy multiple tickets from the driver 
• Cash on the bus 

My usual fare is below £2. Does this mean it will go up to £2? 

• Fares below £2 will remain unchanged, so you will not pay any more than usual for your journey.

Does this cap cover child fares as well as adult fares? 

• Yes. 

I have a concessionary ticket and get free/discounted travel. Will I have to pay £2? 

• Nobody will pay more than they usually do for a journey. If you were previously paying less than £2, or if your journey was free of charge, nothing changes.

Will the price of day, multi-day and weekly tickets and caps, as well as longer term tickets, change? 

• No, the price of these tickets and caps will be unchanged, so you may save if you buy £2 tickets for each journey instead. 

• If you are making several journeys per day, normal day and week tickets are still available which may remain the best option. Tap on, tap off is the easiest way to automatically get the best fare.

If fares are capped, do I still have to ‘tap off’ when I get off the bus as well as ‘tap on’? 

• Yes, you still need to tap off and tap on, in order to ensure we can calculate the correct fare. 

What happens if I change buses – do I have to pay £2 twice? 

• Yes, you do. The fare cap only applies to a journey on a single bus. 

How long does the offer last? 

• The offer runs until the end of June 2023.
