Reigate & Banstead’s virtual Remembrance Sunday service

Residents are being encouraged to honour Remembrance Sunday from the safety of their homes this year.

Unfortunately, Reigate & Banstead Borough Council’s annual Remembrance Sunday services and parades at Banstead, Horley and Redhill war memorials have been cancelled due to ongoing Government restrictions.

To mark the occasion virtually, but safely, the Council has filmed a Remembrance service in advance, which will be broadcast on our social media channels and on Susy Radio 103.4FM on Remembrance Sunday (8 November) and Armistice Day (11 November). Poppies will also be projected onto the Town Hall in Reigate for the evening of Sunday 8 November.

The Mayor of Reigate & Banstead, Cllr Rosemary Absalom, along with Cllr Mark Brunt, Leader of the Council, representatives from the military and the Royal British Legion were filmed laying wreaths in remembrance at a closed service. The filming adhered to Government regulations and took place in October.

The Mayor of Reigate & Banstead, Cllr Rosemary Absalom, said: "While it is extremely disappointing that our usual Remembrance Sunday services and parades will not take place this year, we must continue to follow the Government regulations in order to keep our communities safe."

Residents are encouraged to observe the national two-minute silence on Remembrance Sunday with their household groups, either on their doorsteps or from within their homes.

Any organisations that customarily lay a wreath at the Shaw’s Corner war memorial in Redhill are invited to deliver their wreath to the Town Hall in Reigate on Friday 8 November between 12pm and 3pm. These will be delivered and placed at the memorial on Remembrance Sunday by Council staff adhering to the Government’s social distancing rules. For further details, please email the Mayor’s Office.
