Heritage Open Day

To help celebrate England’s largest festival of history and culture, the Town Hall in Reigate will open its doors for free, pre-booked, public tours on Saturday 10 September. After each guided tour there will also be an opportunity to meet the Mayor in his parlour.

Every year, Heritage Open Days helps everyone to explore hidden places and try out new experiences. Come along to the Town Hall and discover its fascinating 121-year history, as home to many of the community’s public services. The Grade II Listed building, completed in 1901, originally housed the Town Hall, law courts, police and fire stations – the 70-foot former fire station tower is still a major exterior feature today.

HMS Ark Royal Ensign – famous aircraft carrier’s flag

As well as exploring the building itself, you’ll also be able to view a very special ensign (flag) from HMS Ark Royal. The Council has been custodian of it since 1942, along with several items relating to HMS Ark Royal, such as a plaque with the ship’s crest and an accompanying letter about the donation.

Another chance to see Platinum Jubilee display

You can also enjoy Reigate Business Guild’s beautiful Platinum Jubilee display. It includes portraits of the Queen created by local children that were originally installed in Reigate's Tunnel Road for the Jubilee bank holiday. The Guild kindly agreed for them to be displayed outside the Town Hall for Heritage Open Day, to give visitors another chance to view these unique pieces of art.

The Town Hall is at Castlefield Road, Reigate, RH2 0SH and will be open from 10am until 2pm on Saturday 10 September.
