Changes to bin collections this Christmas

Reigate & Banstead Council has confirmed that household bins will not be collected on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day this year. Instead, the borough’s collection crews will be working on Saturdays over the festive period.

Households in the Horley area, which would be due to have their bins collected on Christmas Day will have their bins collected two days earlier than usual - on Saturday 23 December.

All other collections from 26 December until normal service resumes on Monday 8 January will take place one day later than usual. The full collection schedule is available on the Christmas bin collections webpage.

Councillor Hannah Avery, Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services said: “I want to take this opportunity to thank the collection crews and all the staff at our Earlswood Depot for their hard work throughout the year. In all weathers they’re up early making sure we recycle as much of the borough’s waste as possible. Please help them to work as efficiently as possible by continuing to put the right items in the right bin and making sure your bins are ready for collection on the right day.”

The Council’s rubbish trucks, including Bin(g) Crosby and Binderella, love this time of year and are dreaming of a green Christmas. To help residents prepare for a greener and more planet friendly Christmas, the Surrey Environment Partnership has seven sustainable tips on how people can own their impact as they prepare for the festive season. These include avoiding cards and gift wrap containing non-recyclable glitter, foil or plastic; as well as some recipe suggestions to transform festive leftovers. More information is available at www.surreyep.org.uk/seven-sustainable-ways-to-prepare-for-the-festive-season/

It’s important to remember that placing the wrong items in a recycling bin can spoil the rest of the recycling and residents are encouraged to use Surrey Environment Partnership’s handy recycling search tool to check any items they are not sure about.

Garden waste members are reminded that Friday 22 December will be the last garden waste collection before the service takes its annual two-week break over the Christmas period. They will be able to put their real Christmas trees out for collection, making sure all the decorations have been removed, once the service resumes on Monday 8 January.

If anyone has not joined our Garden Waste Service, they can take their old Christmas trees to your local Community Recycling Centre. A link to the Earlswood and Epsom centres can be found at Surrey County Council Community Recycling Centre (tip/dump) website
