Horley Environment Week
Horley Environment Week started as an embryonic idea during a meeting of Horley Town Council’s Environmental Sub-Committee in July 2010. Thankfully, an excellent team worked fast and furiously over the following weeks to facilitate the birth of the Horley Environment Week, which took place, last year, from Monday 20th to Saturday 25th September.
A vigorous publicity campaign was set in motion. Councillor David Powell (Chairman of the Environmental Sub-Committee) came up with our slogan: “Go Horley - go green!” and, to everyone’s delight, Britaniacrest Recycling Ltd provided 60 bright yellow tee-shirts free of charge, complete with the slogan. These were worn by many, members and staff alike, during Environment Week.
Horley Town Council planned the week with a single objective in mind: to actively encourage local people to lower their use of fossil fuels by making sensible lifestyle changes. Residents were invited to fill in pledge sheets and sign up to a maximum of ten energy saving initiatives and local supermarkets and department stores gave away free “Bags for Life” during the week. Local schools took part in an Eco Art competition and a collage of the winning entries was subsequently presented to the winning school, Horley Infants, and the runners up, Meath Green Infants and Manorfield Primary and Nursery School.

All in all the week was an unqualified success and we look forward to achieving even greater things, possibly Borough wide, in 2011 during this year’s Environment Week, planned to take place from 26th September until 1st October.
