Open casting event for Star for a Night: 11 to 18 year olds welcome

An open casting event for young people passionate about singing, dancing or drama takes place on Sunday 28 January at the Harlequin. The casting is for Star for a Night, Reigate & Banstead Borough Council’s annual variety show which is open to young people aged 11 to 18 who live or go to school or college in the borough.

“All young people who come to the casting event are guaranteed a place in the show. You can choose from singing, dancing or drama and the casting event simply gives our experts an idea of what you can do,” says Cllr Ros Mill, Reigate & Banstead Borough Council’s Executive Member for Leisure and Wellbeing.

The council has run Star for a Night for nearly 20 years as a way of supporting young people who enjoy the performing arts and to nurture their talents. At the final shows, the young people perform on stage at the Harlequin to a live audience. “The show is a fantastic opportunity to improve your skills, learning from experts in dance and musical theatre. Performing on stage in a public theatre is an unforgettable experience and the young people really enjoy themselves. Everything you need to know for the casting and rehearsals is on our website, so sign up now” says Cllr Mill.

Participants and their parent or guardian will need to fill in a short online form at where they can also find full information.

Young people taking part in Star for a Night are also in with a chance of winning a one-year scholarship either to Orbit Shed theatre group or Urban Play Street Dance classes.

Star for a Night is funded by Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, Surrey County Council Members’ Allocation Funds (through Cllr Bob Gardner, Cllr Natalie Bramhall and Cllr Barbara Thomson’s allocations) and Reigate and Banstead Councillor Community Awards (through Cllr Grant Duff, Cllr Jonathan Essex and Cllr David Powell’s allocations).

All participants will need to attend rehearsals for the final show. Rehearsals take place at Warwick School in Redhill on Thursday evenings and during the Easter holidays. Final shows are on Thursday 12 and Friday 13 April.
